Question by Phil Lakk: Is there a difference in tobacco from the older, “censored” Djarum Blacks and the fresh opined “cigar” version?
Hello, I have been fuming blacks on and off for years now. Then they got censored. Now they have the fresh 12 pack versus the older 20, and it says filtrated clove cigars instead of cigarettes. I purchased my first pack today and they appear, smoke and nearly taste just like the originals. They are bigger with colorized papers, but they still have the filters (no more sugary tip). Now, is there a difference, or did Djarum just re-label their product to make it sellable?

That’s sad to hear. I utilized to smoke those all the time and haven’t had one in probably 2 years. I can’t believe they got rid of the sugary tip, that was the best

I do not think they were banned, what happened is the tobacco tax. Any rolled cigarette tobacco has a screw you tax on it. So what companies are learning to do is cut the tobacco rougher, call it pipe or cigar tobacco. Then roll it into bigger papers to keep from jamming. Djarum sticking it to the man, yeah! LOL
I believe they are the same tobacco blend in both. There was a recent law banning all flavored cigarettes so they had to technically make then cigars so they could continue to sell them.
The difference is the wrapper. By deffinition, cigarettes are rolled in paper and cigars are wrapped in either tobacco leaf or tobacco paper (which is partially paper and partially tobacco, like most drug store cigars). All that changed was the papers and the size. I may have to try some, I used to like the cigs but that was before I smoked pipes and cigars, now cigarettes just aren’t any good by comparison…
I just bought a pack, after searching for 5 or 6 stores in upper east side NY, they were not on display and had to ask the clerk if they were available, they didn’t seem as “clovey” as I remember them being a couple years back, but maybe thats just my lack of memory acting up again. He gave me a 12 pack for $11.25.
The only cloves available in US are made with part original clove tobacco mixture plus cigar tobacco. They are now wrapped in a cigar tobacco leaf then filtered. The special syrup made of sugar, clove, & cinnamon, that the paper tips rolled around the filters were soaked in is also no longer allowed in the US. The “reason” for the ban on all flavored cigarettes, except menthol, is due to studies that state they were the preferred type of cigarettes for teens between 15-19 years of age, thereby lending to the concluded belief that the “flavored” cigarettes were causing an increase in the number of youths who were beginning the smoking habit and would potentially lead to increased deaths due to cancer related deaths. Whether this is true is yet to be seen. However, I think it is quite humorous that Obama allowed the continued sell of menthol flavored cigarettes. Per chance it is because that is the only flavored tobacco made in the US. Sure don’t want to lose business, ergo money, to another country. That would be sinful when we can kill people with menthol flavoring all by ourselves.
They do not taste the same at all. I usually smoke the regular banned Djarum cigarettes (you can still get them online) and when I run out, or I’m waiting for my cartons to be delivered, I have to resort to the cigars, and they are not that good. Yes, they do taste like cloves, but they also taste like cigars. I guess they’re o.k. if your in a pinch, but I much prefer the cigarettes over the cigars any day. Stupid Obabma!!
Beth, could you please tell me which site is reliable to purchase the djarum blacks? Also, what are the chances of them being confiscated by customs?
