A rare cigar, blended to replicate an authentic Cuban; Pelo de Oro may currently be the best concoction released by Felipe Gregorio.

Felipe Gregorio has produced many blends over the years, most of which have received a rating of 90 or higher by Cigar Aficionado. Some of the more popular blends stemming from this factory include Centenario Classic, Felipe Gregorio Icon, Felipe Gregorio Dominicana, and Power. With factories operating in Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, it is no surprise Felipe Gregorio cigars are completely unique from blend to blend and in high demand.

Pelo de Oro was considered one of the best releases in 2006. Consisting of 7-year-aged Nicaraguan long-leaf tobaccos, wrapped by a rare, Cuban-seed leaf grown in Costa Rica from first generation Cuban seeds, this cigar is rich, complex, and medium-bodied. In addition to its amazing wrapper and high quality filler, Pelo de Oro is rolled using the same methods still employed in Cuba – each leaf is “entubado” (folded accordion style) with the ligero always placed in the center of the cigar, creating incredible combustion for a perfect burn and draw. Offering earthy nuances with undertones of spice and pepper, Pelo de Oro is creamy, smooth, and an excellence choice any time of day.

Pinar 2000

The Pinar 2000 is one of the only cigars on the market that uses authentic pre-embargo Cuban tobacco.

With the onset of the Cuban Embargo in the early 1960’s, the demand for pre-embargo Cuban tobacco went through the roof.  Cigar makers and leaf brokers began buying as much of the prized leaf as they could to ensure continued US production of Cuban cigars.  Today most of the pre-embargo inventories are non existent with the exception of small stashes here and there.  One such inventory is owned by the folks at Pinar who purchased an impressive 46,000 pounds in 1998.  This tobacco is considered the last of the pre-embargo tobacco in the United States and was only still available in the 1990’s because it had been held in a bonded warehouse due to legal proceedings against the original owner.

Today Pinar uses this rare leaf in their Pinar 2000 line, a cigar blended with 100% Cuban fillers and a wrapper and binder from Ecuador.  It is expected that the last remaining Cuban tobacco will only last few a couple of more years which has prompted a surge in demand for the Pinar 2000 as collectors buy up any boxes they can find before this unique blend is lost to the world forever.

Started off spicy. Mellowed after first inch and a half. Uneven burn and had to touch up frequently. Good ash and lots of smoke. Medium finish. Went well with a bottle of Pinot Noir. I’ll let the rest age for a few months, but would definately get some more. – Scotty

Started out spicy nice finish, burned evenly good kick, made me a little shaky. Medium to Full Body gave one to my buddy and he could’nt go to sleep. I slept fine! I want to try the Pinar 3000. – The Hulk

Very spicy. This is a very full-bodied smoke with a full mouth-feel. It tastes very rich and gave me one heck of a head buzz. Definetly a puffer, you wont want to rush this smoke. Esquisite taste, share it with a friend or you will be buzzing hardcore. – Adam Putnam
